The Guide To Owning a Beagle
84my beagle
introduction
Beagles make wonderful pets for young and old. They are a medium sized dog with long ears and lots of energy. Beagles have been on the top 10 list of dog breeds since the 50's. They make great companions and definately don't lack personality. The Beagle is also very devoted and can be loving. Most are wonderful with children and love to play outdoors. Just be sure that they are in a fenced area because if the catch a scent they may run off. This is a guide for anyone who is interested in getting a beagle or owners who just want tips and information.
Concerns
There are some important factors to consider before getting your beagle.
- Beagles have short coats but they do shed.
- Beagles can be very stubborn at times. They take patience in order to train because thier attitude is sometimes a "make me" attitude .
- Beagles howl and bay, which can be irritating to some owners.
- Beagles are full of energy, esspecially as puppies. So they require plenty of exercise.
- Beagles can suffer from chronic health problems because of overbreeding. These include joint problems, ear infections and skin disorders.
- Tendency to run off. Make sure your beagle is in a fenced area or leash. They are often guided by thier noses and will follow it dispite you calls for them to return.
Beagle Care
Grooming- Beagles do well caring for their own coats, but should be bathed a few times a year to maintain a heathy coat. Their teeth should be brushed weekly to control plaque and tartar. Also be sure to clean their ears well once a month at least. Make sure that there isn't an odor coming from them. Be sure not to use qtip because this can damage your dog's ears. Many vets will show you the proper way to clean them. I recommend using a thin cloth and a mixture of warm water and white vinegar. Your beagles nails should be trimmed to keep them short, this only needs done monthly.
Health- Beagles need plenty of exercise and a balanced diet. Don't give your dog table food regardless of how much they beg. This can lead to obesity and health problem. Ask your vet to recommend a type of food and portion sizes based on your dogs weight and age. Be certain to give your dog plenty of fresh water. Last but not least, take your beagle to regular visits with a vet.

History
Just some interesting history for those that wanted to learn more about beagles. The Beagles ancestors date all the way back to ancient Greece. The French Normans liked the dogs for their sense of smell and used them to track small animals. They gave them the name Beagle which translates to "gape throat". The Normans took them to England where they were used to carry saddle bags and were popular with English royals. Beagles came to America in the 1800's. A Beagle named Uno won the Westminster Kennel Club Best in show this year.

Thank You
I would like to thank you for visiting this page and hope that I have been of some assistance. If you decide to get a beagle please check your local animal shelter to adopt a pet. Many dogs are disgarded by their owners. Not only could you possibly save a beagles life but you would have a great companion.

It should be noted that beagles are simply notorious for being escape artists- aside from fencing, this breed of dog should be on a leash when outside (or trained really well!lol!) and they do not enjoy being confined (want to have free reign and be with humans at all times). Extremely needy.
I would also add that they eat their own poop:/
Sarah, your comment made me laugh so hard. I own a Beagle that goes for the ones from cats...
My beagles fit all these categories except they don't eat their own poop. I know, because I'm the one that has to scoop that poop and if they ate it, it would make my job a lot easier (although it would be gross so I'm glad they don't). One thing I did notice is if there is something fowl in my yard (like if a neighborhood cat or squirrel) has let something undesirable, my beagles love to rub themselves on it. They're a joy! Actually, in spite of some of their unsavory habits, they really are a job. I highly recommend them, if you can get past their vocalness. I liken them to teens - they have to have the last word!
My Beagle has been a wonderful dog and companion for me, for the past almost 7 years. He recently got diagnosed with Cushings Syndrome, but thanks to great vet care and meds, he's doing better, lost his hair in some places, but it has returned thankfully, Beagles all the way into 2012!!! Thanks Hunter!!!

I would add , Beagles are also needy and can get anxiety when left alone. They prefer having another animal at home or take to doggy daycare. They also become overweight easily. Excersise and diet is key, for the added weight can cause some joint issues to flare up. Even when the dog was previously healthy...like my Bailey.
